Quincy Softball Splits with Springport in Big 8 Action Quincy after multiple cancellations was excited to finally have there home opener but it was Springport who took the first game 4-2 behind pitcher Morgan Shoemaker’s 17 strikeouts. Hannah Brown pitched well for the Orioles in the loss throwing all 7 innings giving up just 5 hits while striking out 5. Quincy was held scoreless until the bottom of the 7th when Cali Richards walked then stole second base. Hannah Brown then bunted for a single moving Cali to third. After Hannah stole second, Miley Poindexter singled scoring both Cali and Hannah. It was great to see the girls continue to fight but it was to little to late. Cali Richards reached base all three trips to the plate earning 2 walks and also singling. Makiya Feltner and Hannah Brown each singled. Miley Poindexter singled, drove in 2 and stole 3 bases. Quincy started game 2 like they finished game 1 coming to the plate with determination and grabbed an early 2 run lead. It was Quincy this time holding the lead heading into the 7th inning up 4-2. The Orioles extended their lead with 4 runs in the top of the 7th. Springport would not back down as they made things real interesting scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th but ultimately it was Quincy coming out on top 8-6 as right fielder Nakeisha Baker made a running catch in foul territory to end the game. Hannah Brown continued her outstanding pitching throwing the first 2 innings before handing the ball over to Danica Skirka to close out the game. Danika struck out 8 in 5 innings to close the game out. A big part of Quincy’s victory came on their ability to run the bases stealing 7 bases; Taylor Lewis 3, Miley Poindexter, 2 and Deziray Skirka 2. Poindexter and Ary’Annah Freeman each were able to score on separate passed balls to continue being menaces on the bases. Makiya Feltner drove in 3 runs on 2 hits. Miley Poindexter and Deziray Skirka both had two hits and each scored 3 times. Cali Richards and Taylor Lewis each added a single.

Weekly Update with Dale and Mr. Suever
Good things in 5th grade science! This week the science class introduced a tank of tadpoles into the classroom. Students are currently learning about ecosystems and this is a great way to incorporate a part of Michigan's ecosystem into our learning. Some of our tadpoles have been named (although we are unsure how to which one is actually Bob the next day). Students have asked so many great questions about tadpoles and frogs. They will continue to observe and learn about these incredible amphibians as we finish the school year.

Marshall jumped on top early with 4 runs in the bottom of the first taking advantage of a few walks and a fielding error along with a couple timely hits. Quincy tightened up defensively to keep the score within reach but the Redhawks pulled away with a big 3 run homerun in the 4th and then 3 more in the 5th to take the game 11-1. Miley Poindexter kept up her hot hitting with a single and triple. Deziray Skirka singled twice plating Miley for Quincy’s lone run. Shaylee Cope also singled. Hannah Brown pitched well in the loss giving up 6 earned runs while striking out 4 in 4 innings of work. Danika walked 3, struck out 2 and allowed just one hit while having to face just 13 batters; one more than the minimum. Shaylee Cope went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Deziray Skirka singled twice and scored 4 times. Cali Richards collected 2 hits and Taylor Lewis added a single. Quincy spilts DH with Hudson win 3 of 4 on the weekend Oriole Sophomore Cobee Stevens came on in relief and struck out the final batter with a runner at 3rd base to help the Orioles earn a split with the visiting Hudson Tigers on Saturday afternoon. Stevens who also pitched an inning in the 1st game of the DH was called back to duty in game 2 and worked the Orioles out of a jam in the 6th Inning before earning the save in the 7th. Jimmy Maynard started game 2 and was sharp through 4 innings to record the win The Orioles won game 2 11-10 taking advantage of 10 Tiger walks and 9 Oriole hits in the game. Ryan Kempter, led the Orioles at the plate with 2 hits and 3 runs scored. Mason Graves and Alex Barry also had 2 hits and 3 rbi. Barry had a bases loaded 2b hit to score 3 runs and give the Orioles some breathing room. Maynard and Zac Rubley added singles. Brennen Allman walked 4 times in the game and tallied two runs. In Game 1 the Orioles could not recover from some early shoddy defense and fell to the Tigers 7-1. Kempter, and Christian Craven, and Stevens pitched for the Orioles who recorded just 3 hits all singles by Kempter, Graves and Maynard. The Orioles won 3 of 4 on the weekend and look forward to hosting Big 8 Conference foe Springport on Tuesday.

This week, all 5th grade students worked with experts from Meyer Music to choose which instrument they would like to play in 6th grade band next year! Every student gets to try the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone! We are also holding tryouts for percussion. Parents, look for a letter from Mrs. Stout (our band director) coming home soon containing your child's instrument choice and more info about band!
