Welcome to Quincy Middle School!
My name is Brandon Suever and I am blessed to be the principal at QMS. As a proud Quincy alum who grew up down the street from the school, I consider it a great privilege to serve the community that provided so much to me as a young Oriole. We strive to continue that tradition of excellence!
My educational career has afforded me various opportunities, from my beginnings at an at-risk middle school in Battle Creek to teaching 3rd grade in the Detroit area. My wife and I were fortunate enough to replace some of my former teachers over 20 years ago. We continue to work in various capacities within the district and community. I have two degrees from the University of Michigan (Psychology and Education…GO BLUE!) and a master’s degree from Marygrove College, along with my administrative certification through MASSP’s Path to Leadership program. Besides being long-time educators in the district, my wife and I have four boys, covering all three schools within Quincy Community Schools. We can usually be found at one of the various athletic facilities around the area, enjoying our own kids, as well as our students. I have also coached various programs, ranging from robotics and quiz bowl to basketball and baseball. I firmly believe that students should be well-rounded!
At Quincy Middle School, we work diligently to provide our students with the best education we can provide. Again, as a proud alum, I’ve always believed that just because students come from a small town or school, it doesn’t mean their opportunities should be small or limited. We typically have around 350 students, covering grades 5-8. Our 5th graders stay together in homeroom groups while changing classes for each core subject. We find this works well to transition them to the typical movement of middle school. QMS students have their four core subjects, along with an “extension” class time that allows us to add extra support for students with various needs. We provide math and reading intervention, to different degrees, at each grade level. We also provide students opportunities to further their learning in non-core classes during those class periods. Finally, while our 5th grade students rotate through physical education, music, art, and health each week, our 6th-8th grade students choose to be in band or pursue a rotation of topics such as physical education, art, health, and S.T.E.M. As can be seen by state and national testing, our building produces students who rank well and are prepared to succeed in high school and beyond.
We constantly work to improve our processes, focusing on what would be best for our students. One great example of this in recent years is our adjustment of lunchtimes so that each grade level has their own dedicated time in our cafeteria and then gets almost 15 minutes of recess time after that. This has helped tremendously in a variety of ways, but most importantly, it has provided our students with some free time to get fresh air and/or exercise and movement. This is important as we often work through the limitations of our 95-year-old building.
I love working in the community that raised me and feel blessed to work with our amazing kids, families, and staff. Please feel free to reach out if there are ever any questions or concerns.
Go Orioles!
